Frequently asked questions

How high does this trip go?
The highest point is the glacier park on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, around 4,500 m, reached by cable car. Shangri-La sleeps at 3,200 m.
Do I need altitude medicine?
Not usually. You climb gradually from Kunming at 1,890 m, which is the gentlest way to reach the plateau.
Lijiang or Dali?
Both, and in this order. Dali is slower and more rural; Lijiang is busier but has the finest old town in Yunnan.
When is the best time to visit Yunnan?
March to May and September to November. Summer is the rainy season, and winter is dry and sunny but cold at night.
Is there a lot of walking?
Some, but nothing technical. The gorge and the old towns are on foot; everything else can be done by vehicle.
