Three thousand vertical sandstone columns with mist filling the gaps between them. James Cameron turned the place into Pandora; it was already like this long before.
The Wulingyuan park is a UNESCO site: more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars up to 300 m tall, covered in vegetation, linked by cable cars, lifts and walkways.
The most common mistake is trying to see it in a day. These are two separate parks — Wulingyuan and Tianmen — and each needs a full day of its own.
The zone with the most spectacular columns, including the one said to have inspired the film's floating mountains. You ride up in the Bailong lift, the world's tallest outdoor elevator (326 m).
A 2.5 km cable car over the peaks and the classic natural stone bridge linking two mountains.
A 430 m suspension bridge with a transparent deck over a 300 m canyon. Timed tickets with a daily cap.
1,518 m up, with the 99-bend road and 999 steps to Heaven's Gate. The cliff-side glass walk is here too.
A 7.5 km walk along the stream at the foot of the pillars. The best way into the park without the crowds.
A boat ride between peaks that gives a completely different sense of the park.
Three days is the correct standard. Wulingyuan park is enormous and the internal shuttle buses eat up time.
April to May and September to November. Summer brings heavy rain — and with the rain, the mist that makes the photos magical — but also crowds. In winter there can be ice on the walkways.
It isn't a destination to do three days back-to-back if you have knee trouble. There are many stairs and the trails climb and descend without mercy. You can cut the effort a lot by combining cable cars, lifts and the internal bus — our JoyoTour guides plan it that way as standard, so you spend your energy on the views, not the stairs.
