The Yellow Mountain is the landscape Chinese painters tried to copy for a thousand years. At dawn, with mist filling the valleys, you understand why they gave up.
Huangshan isn't a single mountain: it's a cluster of granite peaks you cross on carved walkways and stairways. The famous sea of clouds appears mostly after rain and at sunrise.
The other half of the trip is down below: the Huizhou villages of Hongcun and Xidi, with whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Sleeping up top is the difference between an excursion and an experience. The Dawn Pavilion viewpoint fills up an hour before.
Bright Summit, Lotus Peak and Beginning-to-Believe Peak, with pines clinging to bare rock.
A vertigo-inducing walkway suspended over the void, the most photographed spot in the park.
The setting for 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. Narrow lanes, a half-moon pond and the best surviving Huizhou architecture.
Quieter and less touristy than Hongcun. A good place to eat and wander without queues.
Natural springs at a constant temperature at the foot of the mountain. The ideal way to finish two days of stairs.
Sleeping on the summit multiplies both the price and the experience. If the budget allows, it's the best investment of the trip: you see sunrise without a pre-dawn cable car. Otherwise, do it as a full day from the base.
April–May and October–November. The mist — the sea of clouds — is most likely after rain and on cold autumn mornings. In winter there is snow and ice: beautiful and slippery.
Expect four to seven hours of stairs a day, with real elevation change. It isn't a technical route, but it is a long one. Cable cars cut the effort a lot, provided the route is planned around them.
