A few centimetres of water over a thick salt crust turn the ground into a mirror. At dawn, before the coaches arrive, Chaka reflects the sky so exactly that the horizon disappears.
Chaka Salt Lake sits at 3,059 m in Ulan county, Haixi, on the third day of the Grand Route and a short drive west of Qinghai Lake. The lake is a shallow sheet of water lying on a hard salt crust, and when the wind drops, the surface turns into a mirror that doubles the sky. The water is genuinely thin: only a few centimetres lie over the hard salt below, which is what makes the reflections possible at all.
The effect depends on the water levels that season: too much water and the reflections blur, too little and the crust shows through. This is why we go at dawn, before the coaches arrive and while the air is still. For the rest of the day the lake is a working salt flat, with a small tourist train running across it and shoes that come back white with salt.
A thin film of water over a salt crust turns the ground into a mirror that doubles the sky and the clouds.
The lake is at its calmest and quietest at first light. We arrive early and leave as the tour buses pull in.
A small tourist train runs across the salt flat, a short ride over the crust to the far platforms.
Chaka is still a working salt lake. You walk on the crust, past piles and channels cut for the harvest.
The classic photograph is a lone figure standing in shallow water. Rented boots keep your shoes and socks dry.
At 3,059 m the light is hard and clear. Sunrises come late and the colours stay soft for the first hour.
Chaka is a short drive west of Qinghai Lake, and the day is built around an early arrival. We leave before first light so that you are standing on the salt when the sky begins to colour. By mid-morning the coaches arrive, the wind picks up and the mirror breaks; the difference between the two hours is the whole reason for the early start.
The mirror is not guaranteed. It needs still air and the right depth of water over the salt, and both change through the season. Some mornings are perfect glass, others are rippled and dull. We check the conditions and time the visit accordingly, but the lake always has the final say.
The salt is hard but uneven, and the crust around the water can be soft. Rented boots are worth it, and so is a warm layer, because the plateau at 3,059 m is cold before sunrise even in midsummer. From here the afternoon drive continues west to the emerald lakes of Dachaidan.
